Recognition

Officially recognized by the City of Los Angeles on August 11, 2021.

The designation made Los Angeles one of the first major American cities to formally recognize Hip-Hop as a civic cultural institution: not a genre, but a creative economy, an educational pathway, and a shared history worth preserving.

The City of Los Angeles officially recognized Hip-Hop Day LA as an annual celebration of music, arts and culture.

FAQ

When is Hip-Hop Day LA?
August 11 every year. The platform runs year-round, but August 11 is the citywide anchor date, officially recognized by the City of Los Angeles since 2021.
Who can host an activation?
Anyone. Individuals, community organizations, schools, venues, businesses and cultural institutions can all submit an event to be part of the official citywide celebration.
Does it cost anything to participate?
No. Listing an event on the Hip-Hop Day LA calendar is free. Partnership and sponsorship options exist separately for organizations that want to fund programming.
How do I get a profile in the Community directory?
Profiles are nominated by the public and verified by editorial review. Nominate someone, or submit yourself, through the Get Involved form.
Can I contribute photography or archival material?
Yes, and we want it. Historic flyers, photographs, recordings and oral histories are being collected for the archive with full credit to their owners.
