THE BIRTH OF HIP-HOP:
NEW YORK

The Birth of Hip Hop, August 11, 1973 (New York, NY)

The birth of Hip-Hop is widely recognized with its origins dating back to August 11, 1973, where an 18-year-old, Jamaican-American DJ who went by the name of Kool Herc threw a back-to-school jam at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York.

THE RISE OF THE WEST COAST HIP-HOP SCENE:
LOS ANGELES

Hip-Hop culture has influenced and inspired communities all over the world, speaking up for generations and providing a voice to marginalized populations…including Los Angeles. While 1580 AM KDAY, 1230 AM KGFJ and KACE helped introduce the music and DJ artform through radio, a legendary DJ crew by the name of “Uncle Jamm’s Army” (co-founded by Rodger Clayton) helped introduce the culture to the streets of LA through parties and concerts.

THE FUTURE: NEXT EPISODES
(from ’79 til infinity!)

The early origins of Hip-Hop started in the two most distant parts of the U.S., New York and Los Angeles. What began as a African American, Latino American and Caribbean American youth-led movement and alternative to violence, drugs, alcohol, racism, negative peer pressure and other harms that plague communities of color; Hip-Hop has become a global artform that unifies people from various social and economic backgrounds. We are all ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE!

Hip-Hop Day LA will continue to celebrate the legacy of where it started…and where it’s going!
